Unfortunately, a car is one of the worst investments you will ever make. As far as actual dollars returned to the owner, owning a car is a lost cause. Regardless, for most of us a car is a necessity. So keeping your car in good shape will ensure that your car keeps you in good shape. Plus you may save a few dollars.
- Read your cars owners manual Okay, maybe this seems a little too obvious, but the majority of people never bother to even open their vehicles manual. I know, its not the most interesting read in the world, but you can learn a lot about your vehicles needs.
- Take care of your tires This is just common sense. Your tires are one of the most important parts of your car and should be checked regularly for tread wear and tire pressure. Buy a tire pressure gauge and get your car in to have the tires rotated every 6000 to 7500 miles.
Changing your oil frequently is like the first commandment of automobile care. Ideally it should be changed every 3,000 miles, along with a new filter. With todays modern engine designs, doing this yourself can be an impossible task. Take your car to any one of the many inexpensive oil change shops and they usually check some other things that are needed as well.
Check with the Better Business Bureau and find a trustworthy mechanic. If you dont understand why its going to cost an arm and a leg to make a small rattling go away dont be afraid to ask. If the mechanic doesnt have time to tell you, then dont waste your time with his business. Take your car elsewhere.
Check The Auto Dealer for savings on your car. You can compare insurance rates and even locate recommended mechanics based on your zip code.
